Number of people claiming unemployment benefit in the UK 1971-2024
Just under 1.57 million people claimed unemployment benefits in the United Kingdom in the first quarter of 2024, one of the lowest claimant counts since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns played havoc with the UK economy, leading to the sharp rise in jobless claims seen here in the second quarter of 2020.
