As of May 2022, none of the selected blue hydrogen developers in North America had achieved the promised carbon capture rate of 95 percent. The Quest, Alberta carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility developed by Shell is the one with the highest carbon capture rate, between 77 and 83 percent of the carbon dioxide from operation, transport, and storage of the hydrogen units. By comparison, the Air Products facility in Port Arthur, Texas has a CCS system that captured less than 50 percent of the carbon dioxide generated by the hydrogen production units. CCS technologies involve capturing CO2 emitted from the burning of fossil fuels or from other industrial processes and sequestering the CO2 in underground storage facilities.
