The European Union's emissions from coal-fired electricity generation increased 6.1 percent in 2022, to 365 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e). This accounted for almost 50 percent of the EU's total power sector emissions that year. Although coal is the most carbon polluting source of electricity in the EU, it's share of power sector emissions has fallen considerably over the past two decades, owing to several member states phasing out this polluting fuel for other sources such as natural gas.
