China was world's largest emitter in 2022, having released 10.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO₂) from fossil fuel combustion. The U.S. followed, with emissions of 4.7 GtCO₂. Many of the world's biggest CO₂ emitters observed year-on-year emissions growth in 2022. For example, Indonesia's CO₂ emissions rose 28 percent compared with 2021 levels.
