In 2018, worldwide food-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions amounted to 13.7 billion metric tons of CO2e. However, they would decline if meat-eaters followed a vegan diet. In case of a penetration rate of 20 percent, emissions would decrease by 14 percent, going to 11.7 billion metric tons of CO2e. If 80 percent of the meat-eating population did not consume any animal products, emissions would go down to nearly six billion metric tons of CO2e.
