In 2019, around 601.8 thousand hectares of land in Indonesia was categorized as non-compliance land clearance. This was land that was cleared for oil palm growing without having first underdone a high conservation value (HCV) assessment. In that time period, 2.1 million hectares of palm oil production in Indonesia was certified as sustainable by a recognized global certification body. While this was the largest certified area of all palm-oil producing countries, it was still only a fraction of the total land area used for palm oil production in Indonesia.
