Share of households with IPTV subscription South Korea 2013-2023
Down with cable and up with IPTV
In recent years, the TV market in South Korea also followed the trend of offering web-based services; the revenue of IPTV and digital cable TV had more than doubled in 2019 when compared to 2013, though it has since dropped again. The composition of the market also shifted to a more internet-focused landscape. While IPTV subscription rates increased, the subscription rates for cable television decreased in South Korean households.
Further changes in media consumption
In 2022, television was the main medium of media consumption in South Korea, with paper media becoming an outdated source of information or entertainment. However, more disruptions were on the horizon for the South Korean media market. In the absence of paid OTT services, YouTube was a more popular alternative than traditional television. The reactions of established players in the TV sector to the increasing popularity of new streaming services will be something to keep an eye on for the future.
