In the early 90s, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) passed a regulation for the mandatory phasing in of double-hull tankers as a way to prevent oil spills. Over this period, the number of double-hull carries increased significantly while that of single-hull carriers decreased drastically. In 1990, the global large carrier fleet amounted to roughly 110 million deadweight tonnage, with 90% being of single-hull type and the rest double-hull. By 2013, the global fleet size had reached 175 million tons deadweight, with only one percent of them being single-hull carriers.
