The Suez Canal is one of the vital waterways in global trade, allowing container ships, dry bulkers, and oil tankers to avoid much longer routes through the South Atlantic and southern Indian oceans. In 2019, over 500 million metric tons of containerized cargo were transported by container ships through the Suez Canal.
