Monthly household expenditure distribution on food in Japan 2014-2023, by type
The share of processed foods and prepared meals in Japanese household spending experienced continuous growth in the last decade. In 2023, processed products constituted a 29.8 percent share of food expenditure in multi-person households in Japan, an increase from 28.8 percent in 2014. In the same period, ready-to-eat meals grew by 2.7 percent to reach a 15.1 percent share of expenditure in 2023.
