The September 11 attacks were a series of four suicide attacks by the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda, that were committed in the United States on September 11, 2001. The terrorists hijacked four passenger jets and tried to pilot them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the United States Capitol Building. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks.
