After the past challenging years, Finnish cinemas are recovering from the impact on the global film industry of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. The number of cinema screens in Finland increased to almost 380, after a decline in 2021. Although the film advertising expenditure steadily increased from 2014 to 2019, it recorded a sharp decrease in 2020. Two years later, in 2022, it increased again by almost 81 percent.Following this trend, the number of movie premiers in Finland reached a new high of 217 premieres in 2022. That year, the American action drama film Top Gun: Maverick, directed by Joseph Kosinski was the most watched movie in Finnish cinemas, with over 436 thousand admissions. The most watched domestic movie in Finnish cinemas was The Grump: In Search of an Escort (Finnish: Mielensäpahoittaja Eskorttia etsimässä) by Mika Kaurismäki, with almost 193 thousand cinema admissions.
