A study conducted in the U.S. revealed that the estimated costs related to the nonoptimal consumption of main categories of food and beverages products amounted to nearly 50 billion U.S. dollars. The considered healthcare costs included the acute, chronic, and drug-related costs and were calculated with the inflation value of 2018. The population characteristics and eating habits assessed in the study showed that the daily intake of several categories of foods and nutrients differed from the recommended one. For instance, in the United States the nonoptimal consumption of nuts and seeds led to about 13 billion U.S. dollars of healthcare costs due to cardiometabolic diseases.
