In the fiscal year 2020, the passenger payload distance of Toei Subway in Tokyo, Japan, amounted to nearly five billion passenger-kilometers. Of that distance, commuter passes accounted for around 3.38 billion passenger-kilometers, while regular tickets added up to roughly 1.6 billion passenger-kilometers. Before the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the total passenger payload distance of private operators had been steadily increasing since 2011.

Public transportation in Tokyo is provided by numerous private, privatized, and government-owned enterprises. The two subway operators in the capital, Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway, are both public enterprises.
