Virtual world participation reasons among fashion consumers worldwide 2021
A global survey fielded in 2021 among the communities of digital fashion companies found that the leading reason for participating in virtual worlds was consumers' interest in trying out new technologies. Among those who have engaged in virtual worlds in the past 12 months, almost 9 in 10 respondents selected this response as their main motivation. For half of respondents, virtual worlds (i.e. the metaverse) were an opportunity to immerse themselves in a different environment to escape reality. Social and community aspects of virtual worlds were not as popular as other motivations. Only 30 percent of consumers said they were interested in taking part in virtual worlds so that they could meet up with friends.
