Freedom of expression score in Eswatini 2000-2023
Eswatini scored seven points in the Global Expression Report (GxR) in 2023. This was slightly higher compared to the previous year and four points lower compared to 2020. Furthermore, the country's score was relatively stable between 2000 and 2020, ranging between 11 and 12 points. The drop in 2021 corresponds to pro-democracy protests starting in May 2021, which the government faced with a crackdown.
GxR ranks countries based on the openness of the society, with a higher score being given to countries with more freedom of expression.
