Primary energy consumption in the U.S. 2019-2022, by fuel
Primary energy consumption in the United States increased by nearly three percent in 2022, when compared to the previous year. Oil was the most used energy source, followed by natural gas and coal. By comparison, the least used energy fuel was hydroelectric. In 2022, consumption of oil in the North American country amounted to 36.2 exajoules, while renewables consumption reached 9.46 exajoules.
