Consumption of honey in Germany 2009-2023
Germans consumed around 80.2 thousand tons of honey in 2023, based on preliminary figures. This corresponds to a per capita consumption of 949 grams. Honey is becoming increasingly popular among those who look for alternatives to sugar in their daily food consumption. However, the figure shows a decrease compared to the previous year at 88.6 thousand tons.
Honey, I’m home
Honey was the second most popular bread spread in Germany after marmalade or jam. Bread with honey is a beloved breakfast component or generally one of the population’s favorite snacks. Honey is also used in many products sold in Germany, such as gingerbread and honey cakes. Per capita consumption fluctuated somewhat in recent years, though generally it remained within the one kilo mark.
Buzz value
Being an animal product, it is important to consider how bees are treated in order to gain honey and what manufacturing conditions are like. Increasing attention is devoted from beekeepers and consumers alike to how honey is produced and distributed. Encouragingly so, sales volume figures for certified fairtrade honey have gone up in Germany, especially between 2012 and 2017. In Europe, the countries with the most organic beehives were Bulgaria, Italy and Romania.
