Popular genres of music performances Japan FY 2022, by age group
According to a survey conducted in Japan in January 2023, around 17.7 percent of respondents aged between 18 to 19 years attended music performances of modern genres like pop, rock, jazz, enka, or folk music within the last year, while about 21 percent of the same age group attended classical music performances. Enka refers to a Japanese chanson-like music genre with a distinct vibrato singing style that often features sentimental lyrics about a yearning for a distant hometown, bygone lovers, and other nostalgic topics.
