Vehicle registration number South Korea 2023, by fuel type
Of approximately 25.95 million registered automobiles in South Korea in 2023, over twelve million burned gasoline for fuel, while another 9.5 million had diesel engines. The share of gasoline and LPG-fueled vehicles decreased compared to the previous year, while the number of environmentally-friendly hybrid, electric, and hydrogen vehicles have increased. This is in part due to government initiatives pushing the development of charging infrastructure for such green vehicles. Ongoing environmental issues, such as the particulate matter coming from China and climate change, have affected the way Koreans perceive environmental issues, stimulating greater interest in preserving the environment.
