Number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in South Sudan 2021, by state
South Sudan has Africa’s biggest and world’s third-largest refugee crisis. Since the outbreak of the South Sudanese War in 2013, almost four million South Sudanese have been displaced. As of September 2021, there were 1.7 internally displaced persons in South Sudan. Internally displaced persons are people who are forced to leave their house but remain within their country's borders. The states of Warrap, Jonglei, Central Equatoria, and Upper Nile counted each over 200 thousand displaced persons. Over two million South Sudanese sought safety in neighboring Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
