Military expenditures - change in highest spending countries 2022-2023

Military expenditure increased in 13 of the 15 countries with the highest military expenditure from 2022 to 2023. This was particularly the case in Russia and Ukraine amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but also in Poland, Ukraine's neighboring country, where military expenditure increased by 75 percent. Military spending also increased significantly in Israel amid Hamas' terrorist attack in October 2023 and the subsequent war in Gaza.
