Sales value of Chupa Chups in Spain 2012-2020

The Spanish brand dedicated to the manufacture and sale of candy with a stick, Chupa Chups, had a revenue of over 70 million euros in 2020, quite a significant decrease compared to the previous years. In the early '60s, the company Granja Asturias, headed by Enrique Bernat, invented a candy with a stick, which would be called Chupa Chups. The product's success in Spain and worldwide led the company to take the name of its product. After experiencing declining sales in the early 2000s, the Italian Perfetti Van Melle bought the Spanish enterprise.

The success of Spanish candies

Candies are not the predominant product in the confectionery industry, but it is a product that has a long tradition with symbolic products such as Chupa Chups. The company, however, is not heading the market. Indeed, a few other candy companies in Spain prevail.

Despite the international success of candy, it is not the star product of the confectionery industry in Spain. Chocolate is the flagship confectionery product in the country, with the signs of slowing down. In 2020, the consumption of chocolate amounted to over 158 million kilograms.

Even though reducing sugar consumption is being increasingly talked about, chocolate remains the highest-grossing product among confectionary sales in Spain.
