This survey shows the distribution of the alleged perpetrators of abuse and their relationship to the reported elderly abuse victim in the United States, as of 2003. About 11.3 percent of elderly abuse perpetrators were the spouse or intimate partner of the victim. Neglect can be defined as the refusal or failure to fulfill one's obligations to an elderly person and includes paying for necessary home care services. Many cases of elderly abuse remain unreported and thus, may be massively underestimated.
