In 2016, the apparel industry emitted almost 3.3 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent worldwide, while the footwear industry's greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 700 million metric tons. Combined, these two industry accounted for some eight percent of the global GHG emissions in that year.
