What are the top ranked universities worldwide?

The 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy rates Harvard University in the United States as the top university worldwide. Interestingly, out of the top 12 universities, ten of these are in the United States. Stanford University is ranked second and Massachusetts Institute of Technology is in third place. The two non-American universities in the top 12 are both British – the University of Cambridge is ranked fifth while the University of Oxford comes tenth.
