The Green Rankings focus on the largest publicly traded companies globally, consisting of the largest 500 companies by market capitalization (as of December 2016).

To produce the Green Rankings, Newsweek partnered with Corporate Knights. The ranking is designed to rank large public companies on environmental metrics in a rules-based way that meets the test of being replicable by a third party.

With this in mind, the methodology is designed to be consistent with the following six principles: transparency, objectivity, public availability of data, comparability, engagement with eligible companies, stakeholder inclusion.
The U.S. 500 consists of an assessment of the sustainability performance of the 500 largest publicly-traded companies headquartered in the U.S. by revenue as at 31 December 2016.
