The number of United States military personnel deployed around the world has varied through history. The operation in Afghanistan had dominated international news since 2001, before it ended in 2021. Apart from troops deployed in the United States and U.S. territories, the contingent in East Asia and the Pacific was the largest with 81,000 military personnel. Moreover, there were over 66,000 military personnel deployed in Europe as of September 2023.
