Social networking is one of the most popular internet activities in North America. As of April 2015, almost three-quarters of internet users in the United States accessed market leader Facebook. Social sharing platform Pinterest had the second-largest reach among the U.S. online population with a 31 percent usage rate, followed by Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter. Overall, 73 percent of internet users in the United States had a social networking profile, up from 48 percent in 2010. The number of social network users in the United States is projected to surpass 200 million users in 2019, up from 180 million in 2015. As of the second quarter of 2015, U.S. customers were most satisfied with social network Pinterest. Online video platform YouTube was ranked third in terms of user satisfaction.
Social networks are also especially popular on mobile. As of June 2015, several social networks ranked among the most popular mobile apps in the United States based on mobile audience reach, with Facebook ranking first again. During an annual study of mobile online usage, it was found that Facebook also accounted for 19 percent of the time spent on mobile apps and devices in the United States. Facebook, messaging and social accounted for 31 percent of time spent on mobile.
