They are usually used by insurance companies to transfer some risk to cat bonds investors. If a catastrophe occurs, the insurance companies can use the money coming from cat bonds to pay out the premiums to the insurance holders. If there is no catastrophe in the specified time frame, the cat bond investors get their money invested in the bond back, increased by a coupon. The value of catastrophe bonds issued globally amounted to 5.92 billion U.S. dollars in 2015.
