Recreational and cultural services: weekly UK household expenditure 2020-2022, by age

According to a survey conducted in the United Kingdom, respondents with a household reference person aged between 30 to 49 spent an average of nearly 19.5 British pounds a week on recreational and cultural services in the fiscal year ending March 2022. This was the highest figure among all age groups. Meanwhile, respondents with a household reference person aged between 65 to 74 had an average weekly spending of 14 British pounds on recreational and cultural services.

The household reference person was defined in the source as one who
Owns the household accommodation, or
Is legally responsible for the rent of the accommodation, or
Has the household accommodation as an emolument or perquisite, or
Has the household accommodation by virtue of some relationship to the owner who is not a member of the household.
If there are joint householders, the household reference person is the one with the higher income. If the income is the same, then the eldest householder is taken.

Recreation and culture includes audio-visual, photographic and information processing equipment (e.g. TV, computers, CD players), games, toys, hobbies, computer games and software, equipment for sports, camping and open-air recreation, horticultural goods, gardening equipment, plants, pets, pet food, recreational and cultural services (e.g. sports admissions and subscriptions, cinema, theatre, museums, TV licenses, internet and cable subscriptions, film/photo development and gambling payments), newspapers, books, stationery and package holidays.
