The transportation sector is the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion in the United States. In 2021, transportation-related CO₂ emissions amounted to over 1.75 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCO₂). This was followed by the electricity generation sector, at 1.54 GtCO₂ that year.
