Of the 195 countries and territories assessed in "Freedom of the Press 2009", which covers events and conditions in 2008, a total of 70 (36 percent) were rated free, 61 (31 percent) were rated partly free, and 64 (33 percent) were rated not free. In terms of the population, the 2009 survey found that only 17 percent of the world’s inhabitants lived in countries that enjoyed a free press, while 41 percent had a partly free press and 42 percent didn't have a free press. In numbers, that means, in 2008, 2.8 billion people lived in countries without press freedom and 1.1 billion people lived in countries with unlimited press freedom.
