by Felix Richter, 07.11.2012

This chart shows Twitter records set on Election Day 2012.

Shortly after the first news organizations had called the 2012 presidential election for Barack Obama, the incumbent president of the United States turned to his many Twitter followers: "Four more years." he tweeted alongside a picture of him and his wife Michelle in warm embrace.

The message was retweeted more than 600,000 times, making it the most popular tweet in the history of the microblogging service.

The 31 million election-related tweets posted throughout yesterday, make Election Day 2012 the most tweeted political event ever.

With 327,452 tweets per minute, the activity peaked shortly after the first networks had called Obama’s re-election.
