Annual commercial and consumer payments in North America 2014-2022, by product type
Consumer-based credit card transactions were worth about one-third of North America's total payments revenue in 2022, having increased by 33 percent. The source compares the region to the world overall: Commercial made up 53 percent of global payments revenue, compared to 47 percent for consumer payments in the same year. This distribution was more pronounced in North America, with consumer-driven payments making up 61 percent of overall revenue, whereas commercial payments reached 39 percent. The source calls North America very much card-driven, possibly due to the importance of credit cards in the United States in POS and e-commerce.
