Rebound in financial accounts

For over a decade, Lufthansa’s operating performance had been increasing considerably, but Germany’s biggest airline faced fierce headwinds with the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic. In 2020, the number of passengers transported by the Lufthansa Group fell by 74.9 percent compared to the previous year, and in 2021, performance remained low, with only 46.9 million passengers. The airline cut jobs to mitigate the decline in financial accounts, with the number of Lufthansa Group's employees falling by nearly 30,000 between 2019 and 2020. The group was also one of several European airlines to receive government bailouts in 2020 - the state aid package was worth a reported nine billion euros. In 2021, the Lufthansa Group’s operations started to recover from the initial shock of the pandemic. Nonetheless, the operational figures remained below pre-pandemic levels due to the emergence of novel challenges in the airline industry, including staff shortages and strikes among airport personnel and pilots. As of 2023, the group’s revenue amounted to 35.4 billion euros and the revenue in passenger airline segments also reached a new peak of 28.3 billion euros. An analysis of Lufthansa AG’s key operational figures shows the airline made a net profit of nearly 1.7 billion euros in 2023, a sign the company has rebounded from the economic turbulence caused by the pandemic.

Road to Zero emission

Lufthansa AG aims for continuous transformation and modernization of its fleet and operations to align with the dynamic geopolitical climate. To achieve its goal of sustaining aviation, the organization continuously invests in eco-friendly aircraft and puts forward initiatives to enhance their environmental impact. Lufthansa Group emitted 88 grams of carbon dioxide per passenger kilometers in 2023, the lowest since recent years. The Germany's flag carrier airline group, Lufthansa aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, and the company will continue to provide concrete information about its strategies for reducing carbon emissions in the future.
