Germany is the largest contributor to transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union, having released 148 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2021. This accounted for roughly 20 percent of the EU-27's total transportation GHG emissions. France and Italy followed with 135 and 103 MtCO₂e, respectively.
