In order to limit the rise in global temperature by 1.5°C by 2050, the international shipping industry needs to both lower its energy consumption and decarbonize in line with net zero ambitions. In 2050, the industry will have to transition from using fossil fuels—namely heavy fuel oil and very low sulfur fuel oil—to relying on renewable fuels—such as e-ammonia, e-methanol, and electricity.
