In 2020, Gazprom held most of its natural gas reserves in the Ural Federal District, which amounted to approximately 18.4 trillion cubic meters. Gazprom is one of the largest natural gas extractors in the world. The company was created in 1989 after the Soviet Ministry of Gas Industry became a corporation.
