A stealthy social media contender
Since being founded in 2009, Pinterest has managed to stay out of the headlines somewhat more than other well-known social platforms, and generally achieves a positive user opinion. As of July 2023, Pinterest received a user satisfaction rating of 73 out of a possible 100 points, up from 71 points in 2022. This means that Pinterest ranks above LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook in terms of user approval.Additionally, when it comes to audience development, Pinterest saw a 7.5 percent growth in users between 2022 and 2023, another achievement which puts the service ahead of Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.
Pinterest’s loyal fanbase
Much of Pinterest’s content focuses on creative inspiration, including DIY projects, lifestyle ideas, home décor, and recipes. Women aged 25 to 34 years made up the largest share of Pinterest’s global audience, accounting for over 20 percent of users. Across all age groups, women were far more likely than men to be active on Pinterest. Moreover, Pinterest finds 89 million loyal users in the United States. The average revenue per user (ARPU) in the United States and Canada stood at 8.07 U.S. dollars as of the fourth quarter of 2023, miles ahead of the ARPU in Europe and the rest of the world.
Search terms catching our eye
In addition to home improvements and many kinds of creative output, Pinners also like to search beauty, travel, wellness, and dating related terms. Imaginative hairstyles and hair colors were popular search terms in 2022, with “lavender and pink hair” seeing a year-on-year increase of 345 percent. Search queries about train travel and travel photography also saw rises in recent years. Other popular search queries included “art journal therapy” and “writing therapy", demonstrating the unique content and artistic users that the platform attracts.Pinterest has established a quiet corner of the internet where users can relax and use social media without the noise that often comes from other platforms. Hopefully, for Pinterest, Generation Z audiences will continue to see the platform as a break from the constant interactions and connectivity that comes with most social media services.
