Steel production is forecasted to become the greatest consumer of industrial hydrogen in Europe by 2040. Hydrogen could become a key player in decarbonizing the emission-intensive steel sector. Currently around 47 million tons of carbon dioxide are emitted during the production process, largely due to the use of coking coal in conjunction with iron ore. Using hydrogen instead of coke could help the sector to significantly reduce its carbon footprint. Assuming moderate economic growth across all sectors and adherence to governmental net zero targets, hydrogen demand within the steel sector could grow to 123 terawatt hours by 2050.
