A characteristic feature of the Indonesian mobile internet market lies in its focus on social media. As of the third quarter of 2018, 81 percent of the population who are using the internet do own a Facebook account and 52 percent were on Twitter. In 2012, Jakarta, the capital and largest city of Indonesia, was named the number one Twitter city in the world, since it generated more Tweets than anywhere else. Social media in Indonesia is not only much used by local and international companies to establish brands and boost their businesses, it also plays a crucial role in shaping public opinions.
