Fresh-food meal kit delivery services send customers a variety of fresh ingredients with a recipe with which to construct the meal. The service is beneficial to consumers who are short on time but still wish to be able to eat meals with fresh ingredients, rather than relying on restaurant or prepared meals. In a recent survey, three of the top four reasons for using meals kits according to consumers centered around convenience.

As of February 2018, Blue Apron and HelloFresh were the leading meal kit delivery companies in the United States. Together, the two companies account for nearly 70 percent of the market. Both companies have experienced explosive growth, with Blue Apron’s net revenue growing by 758 percent from 2014 to 2018 and HelloFresh’s revenue growing by 1,738 percent over the same period.
