In the fourth quarter of 2022, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) recorded a market share of 58.5 percent in the global semiconductor foundry market, while Samsung occupied 15.8 percent of the market. In terms of revenue, the top ten semiconductor foundries worldwide generated 33.53 billion U.S. dollars in the fourth quarter of 2022.
Semiconductor manufacturing process
The semiconductor supply chain can be categorized into roughly three distinct stages: design, fabrication, and assembly. Companies that perform all three of these steps are referred to as integrated device manufacturers (IDMs), with examples including Intel and Samsung. Firms that only design chips, known as fabless IC companies, rely on chip manufacturers, or foundries, for fabrication.
Semiconductor foundries
Fabless companies work closely with the foundries – companies that manufacture chips in fabrication plants (fabs) – with the market leader TSMC contracted by a variety of companies. Founded in 1987, TSMC decided not to manufacture any products under its name so that the company never engages in direct competition with its customers. Under this strategy, TSMC became the world’s largest semiconductor foundry and a key supplier for large tech companies.

Two days later, the New York-based Signature Bank followed SVB. The value of assets lost in its failure amounted to roughly 110.4 billion U.S. dollars, making it the third largest bank failure in U.S. banking history. All together, there were 563 bank failures in the United States between 2001 and 2023.
In 2023, around 18.7 million Americans watched the Academy Awards ceremony. The number of 15-second TV blocks on BBC News and Al Jazeera reached around 39.3 thousand and 32.2 thousand in March 2022, up 1,267 times and 205 times compared to March 2021, respectively.
Total assets of Credit Suisse fell drastically in 2022 as it dropped to 531.36 billion Swiss francs, down from 755.83 billion Swiss Francs a year earlier. This was the lowest value of assets the Swiss bank reported since 2005. This sharp decrease was equivalent to a negative 29.7 percent asset growth rate, an unprecedented growth decrease for Credit Suisse. At the same time, market capitalization of Credit Suisse also fell significantly.
Volkswagen Group’s revenue grew in the 2022 fiscal year. The carmaker’s 279.2 billion euros in revenue also secured VW a spot in the ranking of the wealthiest companies worldwide.
Key brand
The Volkswagen Passenger Cars division represented the largest contributor to the company’s revenue with a revenue share of about 26.4 percent in 2022. The flagship brand mainly has hatchbacks, convertibles, and sedans, as well as an array of minivans and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in its product line-up.
