Apple's iOS continues to hold the largest share of the smartphone operating systems market in the United States, claiming more than half of the market as of March 2023. Apple's share of the US market has risen steadily since early 2012, when it accounted for around 30 percent. This growth is not reflected in all markets, however, with Apple's global share remaining stable year-on-year.
Apple growing at home
Under CEO Tim Cook, Apple has continued to follow a stunning growth trajectory. Apple became the first U.S. company with a market capitalization in excess of two trillion dollars, just two years on from becoming the first trillion-dollar company. The iPhone, responsible for much of the company’s growth, has cemented its status as the smartphone of choice for many Americans during recent quarters. Google's Android operating system is a close competitor in the US OS market, accounting for around 48 percent of the market as of November 2022. However, Apple commands a far wider lead in the US smartphone manufacturer market, with the Android user base split between various vendors such as Samsung and Motorola.
Apple’s popularity across markets
Apple has seen success with the iPhone in developed markets across the globe. iPhones accounted for four of the five most-sold handsets in the United Kingdom during January 2022, and three of the leading five in Germany. Yet the high price of Apple devices puts Apple at a disadvantage outside of wealthier markets. In Africa, iOS accounted for around 12 percent of the mobile OS market in June 2022, while Android dominated with an 86 percent share.
In 2022, the number of short-range internet of things (IoT) devices reached 10.3 billion worldwide. That number is forecast to increase to 25 billion by 2027. The wide-area IoT devices amounted to 2.9 billion in 2021 and are predicted to reach 5.4 billion by 2027.
In the past few years, video game subscription services have grown in prominence and popularity. As of June 2023, most video gaming subscriptions in the United States start around 9.99 U.S. dollars per month, with the individual subscription to Nintendo Switch Online being the cheapest with a 3.99 U.S. dollar pricing. Ubisoft+ and PlayStation Plus Premium are at the other end of the scale, costing 17.99 U.S. dollars on a monthly basis.

In 2022, América Móvil, which controls brands like Claro, had the biggest annual revenue in Latin America and the Caribbean among the telecommunication providers presented. The group, headquartered in Mexico City and led by chairman Carlos Slim, generated around 43.5 billion U.S. dollars in revenue that year. The Latin American operation of Madrid-based Telefónica ranked second with a revenue of nearly 19.3 billion dollars.
