The pace of foreign tourist growth in India has accelerated rapidly over the past five years. 1.96 million visitors arrived in India in 2008, a number which grew to 2.43 million by 2012. Unfortunately, confidence among holidaymakers has been shaken by a spate of gang rapes across the country.
As a result, growth has almost ground to a halt. Between 2009 and 2010, foreign tourist visits to India grew 13.8 percent. The pace of this growth slowed down slightly to 9 percent between 2011 and 2012. Between 2012 and 2013, it slackened off dramatically with an increase of just 1.8 percent.
