18 percent of South African car owners have a Volkswagen in their household, leading the 21 countries surveyed in the most recent edition of Statista's Global Consumer Insights survey. South Africa is followed by Austria and Germany, which is possibly explained due to the "home Advantage" of the Germany-based Volkswagen Group. In other major markets like China, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, ownership of Volkswagen cars is far less pronounced.
For example, only seven percent of Chinese respondents who own a car said their primary household car was a Volkswagen. This is despite China being the second-most important market for the company with one third of all Volkswagen Group deliveries in 2024 going to the People's Republic. In the U.S., the ownership share stood at two percent, while it was at six percent in the United Kingdom. This figure only represents Volkswagen models and not other brands and makes under the Volkswagen Group umbrella like Seat, Audi or Porsche.
Between Q4 of 2023 and Q3 of 2024, the Volkswagen Group led the automotive industry in revenue generated with roughly $355 billion, followed by Toyota with $312 billion and Ford with $183 billion according to data from Companies Market Cap. The full-year results for 2024 are expected in March, although they likely won't live up to the 2023 Performance, with overall deliveries down 2.3 percent year-over-year.
