Urban and suburban passenger land transport revenue in France 2010-2022
France is famous for its first-rate public-transport network, which connects almost the entire country barring only a few rural areas. The state-owned Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF) along with short-haul trains, and a few local bus companies shoulder much of the responsibilities of public transportation between them. However, there is a steady increase in ride hailing and ride sharing services with technology driven companies such as like BlaBlaCars and Uber, who are slowly but surely gaining market share. According to the latest estimates by Statista, the revenue of urban and suburban passenger land transport is expected to decline over the next few years to reach 1.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2023 from 9 billion U.S. dollars in 2016.

BlaBlaCar leads the ride hailing market

Ride hailing is by far the fastest growing of all the Online Mobility Services segments in the country. There is a wave of new technology-based companies entering the market backed by strong venture funding which makes the market more competitive. Blablacar, a carpool platform founded in 2004, led the start-ups with highest funding of 50 million U.S. dollars in November 2018. Uber another leading player in the market, has witnessed a robust increase in adoption with nearly 30% of the internet users in France having used it at least once. However, SNCF managed to remain on top of the web search as most visited ground transportation websites in France as of April 2019.

Highest employment rates in the road transport sector

The transport sector plays a pivotal role in the country’s economy and is one of the highest employers in the country. Unsurprisingly, the road transport segment had the highest number of employees in 2015.
