Industry revenue of retail sale of clothing in specialised stores in Norway 2011-2023

Even though the Norwegian fashion market is growing at a steady pace over the last few years, retail sales in specialized stores are declining with revenues expected to fall from 4.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2016 to 3.7 billion U.S. dollars by 2023. One of the main reasons for this is the poor state of the retail sector as a whole which saw the total number of enterprises drop from 27,973 in 2007 to around 24,000 a decade later in 2017. Varner Gruppen which owns brands such as Bik Bok, Carlings, Cubus and Days Like This and Gresvig which owns Boys of Europe, G-Max and G-Sport) were the country’s two largest retailers in terms of turnover in 2018.

Norway big on sustainable fashion

According to a study by the UN, fast fashion, which is expected to value 44 billion U.S. dollars by 2028, is more damaging to the environment than all the world’s planes and ships combined. And 80% of the greenhouse emissions are a result of manufacturing clothes. Many Norwegian fashion companies such as Helly Hansen, Norrona, Livid Jeans, Days Like This and Lillunn, have now taken it upon themselves to combat this growing problem which includes choice of materials, chemicals, excessive use of water, logistics, overproduction and recycling.
