When asked for their primarily used car makes, a major part among Mexican respondents (aged 18 to 64) who have a car available in their household, Chevrolet, owned by one of the biggest automotive companies in the world, General Motors, ranks first followed by Nissan. Ford which holds the second largest market share in the U.S, claimed fourth spot.
Automotive industry in Mexico
From 2005 to 2018, the number of motor vehicles in circulation in Mexico increased by over 100%. In 2018, passenger cars for private use by far represented both major type and use of automobiles in Mexico with over 31 million in fleet size.
Having said that, the sales numbers of new vehicles in Mexico have seen a downward trend between 2017 and 2019. Around 850,000 vehicles were sold in Mexico in the first half of 2019, a decrease of more than six percent from the same period during the previous year.
